Episode 24: Social Media 101 Breakdown
June 28, 2008
The show started late because of Geoff!
Geoff and Aaron broke down the morning’s social media 101 event, at which Geoff keynoted and appeared on three panels, but Aaron was stone-walled.
Aaron remarked there were a lot of hot girls at the event., but both Geoff and Aaron quickly bailed on what could have been DC’s Sexy Geek Girls episode.
Aaron ragged on Matt from R2Design, while Geoff made cheap excuses for him. But then they talked about how Geoff got cut off on the mobile question, one of Geoff’s areas of domain expertise.
Geoff went into his white paper. Then they ragged on the widget answer. A great chat about the future of mobile and social continued.
Then they discussed how Facebook is the world’s most trafficked social network. Most of this traffic comes on the mobile phone.
Lauren Vargas called in briefly. Later she wins a present.
Then Geoff and Aaron had some good natured fun at Scoble and Gary Vaynerchuk’s behalf. Aaron discussed the great tie between Scoble and politics that occurred.
Aaron was particularly impressed with the accessibility of politicians on Twitter. We discussed if it was bettering democracy. Then we discussed astroturfing and blaming the intern.
Qui Diaz interrupted Aaron to ask if he had her cell # programmed. Aaron got defensive.
A give away ensured. Discussion of Scoble event continued. Geoff broadcasted he wasn’t going to show. And then the show ended early.
Episode #13: Lots of DC Events coming, Aaron’s move to Download Squad and Is Scoble really Listening?
April 1, 2008
Geoff is in Vegas right now at CTIA. He’s planning on launching a personal blog where he can talk about things like his horrific taxi experience in Vegas today.
Then we talked about the D Ring’s coverage of Destroyermen, an awesomely transparent blog from a Navy Destroyer where it shows life on a Destroyer. While it’s unclear if this blog has passed the DoD sniff test, we do applaud the transparency and would like to tell DoD that this exactly what we need to see out of the government and in this case the military. It should be encouraged and not smacked down.

We then talked about my new gig at Download Squad. Grant is heading over to Fast Company and I’ll be taking over. Grant then calls in to congratulate me. Likewise, Grant… congratulations and thanks for the opportunity! And Shel’s show needs some help!
Shashi calls in to offer his review of Social Matchbox and congratulate me on the new gig.
Grant Robertson, the former chief editor at Download Squad, calls in to congratulate me on the new job. Christina Warren will be the first one I fire on Grant’s recommendation.
Aaron drops the requisite curse word.
We talk about events like Tech Cocktail DC, Gnomedex, DC PHP, New Comm Forum in Sonoma in California.
Quick review of Refresh DC from this past week.
Silly Valley was all about Scoble’s post on Twitter and how having more Twitter followers does NOT mean more listening.
Update: The whole moving to Download Squad bit was an April Fools joke - and the jokes on you. ;-)
District of Corruption #8: Twitter, Scoble and Coworking
February 26, 2008
Great show today. Let’s get into it.
We kicked off the show discussing Twitter. Is it really a legitimate network with less than 1% of the U.S. population? Can it really scare? Why shouldn’t Twitter be more along the lines of a protocol that other companies and innovators can build on? Geoff had a post that stirred up some controversy along these lines today.
Scoble is complaining that tech bloggers aren’t talking about politics. Has he seen the DC community? Only in DC will social media people get together to watch political results come in on Super Tuesday.
Alex Hillman who was the founder of Independent’s Hall joined us to talk about coworking. He discusses how the Philly community transitioned from huddling at cafés to a full fledge community, how they are able to cover their expenses at minimal impact to the community.
