District of Corruption #8: Twitter, Scoble and Coworking
February 26, 2008
Great show today. Let’s get into it.
We kicked off the show discussing Twitter. Is it really a legitimate network with less than 1% of the U.S. population? Can it really scare? Why shouldn’t Twitter be more along the lines of a protocol that other companies and innovators can build on? Geoff had a post that stirred up some controversy along these lines today.
Scoble is complaining that tech bloggers aren’t talking about politics. Has he seen the DC community? Only in DC will social media people get together to watch political results come in on Super Tuesday.
Alex Hillman who was the founder of Independent’s Hall joined us to talk about coworking. He discusses how the Philly community transitioned from huddling at cafés to a full fledge community, how they are able to cover their expenses at minimal impact to the community.
Episode #6: Porn
February 12, 2008
The show was a weird one. Ice took out my internet connection just minutes before the show forcing me to relocate to Panera Bread (yay, free wifi!) while Geoff was in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress drooling over the new Nokia N96. His connection was shoddy, mine was shoddy, the show was delayed - but we had fun.
- Geoff’s brief review of Mobile World Congress
- Aaron invites himself to Barcelona for any speaking engagement
- Microsoft-Yahoo bid declined by Yahoo! $45B is way too cheap and insulting
- Geoff didn’t vote. He’s a deadbeat. :-)
- The outcome of the Potomac Primary could tip the vote toward Barack Obama making him the front runeer
- When was the last brokered convention? Geoff things it was 1968 when Bobby Kennedy was assassinated
- Caller Steve speculates on Yahoo deal from an earnings per share perspective. Also clarifies that the last brokered convention for the GOP was in 1952 and the Dems in 1948
- Would Google win or lose if the deal were to be completed?
- DC local WebMethods founder is launching a video job search/recruiting site
- Aaron mentions Standout Jobs as already doing this. Brings up discrimination potential.
- 9 DC government workers fired for viewing porn. We’re shocked.
- Geoff tells a porn story. People can’t get fired for viewing porn in Barcelona.
- Geoff drops the requisite F-bomb just to get the iTunes Mature rating
- Silly Valley: Hot or not to be acquired for $20M?
Episode #5: Super Tuesday and Microhoo
February 5, 2008
- Amy Vining, the gossipy nurse on General hospital died. Yes, it’s a slow news day.
- It’s Super Tuesday in the District of Corruption
- Aaron endorses Ronald Reagan
- Mudslinging in the campaign
- Sidetracked by talking about Super Bowl ads
- Will we see a split election?
- Aaron issues a disclaimer: He’s not Rick Klau
- Was the Clinton/Obama kiss-fest an indicator of candidates jockeying for a dual ticket?
- Geoff hates this city
- Caller Rob chimes in on an interesting bellwether: Who would he drink a beer with?
- We do have a DC area Super Tuesday tweetup tonight at Mayorga Cafe at the Tivoli Theatre to watch the results come in. 3303 14th St NW
- Jeff Pulver, Social Media Breakfast on Thursday 7, 2008 - Busboys and Poets, 2021 14th St NW, Near the U Street Cardozo Metro station
- Amanda Gravel mentions that there’s a Boston Tweetup as well at Boston Beer Works on Brookline Ave (Fenway), 61 Brookline Ave
- Steve Rubel asks me to take back our B-slap from last show. Aaron refuses and explains why
- Geoff explains that Bryan Person started the Social Media Breakfast thing and that Jeff Pulver took the name, but has since changed his tune.
- Caller Shashi clarifies Social Media Breakfast venue (noted above)
- Silly Valley: Microhoo. Who cares? Isn’t Google’s reaction more interesting? There’s not much that Yahoo can bring to Microsoft; and vica versa. Quoting Robert Scoble.
- Who uses Opera?
