Episode 12: When “Community” is offensive. And Odeo.

March 25, 2008

Jimmy Gardner fills in for Geoff who is off traveling for a client.

Jimmy explains some of his thoughts on community and some of the pushback that he’s gotten as he’s focused on the DC Tech community. Community is a perception of what is around us.

Maybe we need to stop using the term “DC Tech Community” and less loosely define it as “tech”?

Did I just call Geoff my “normal” cohost? Is he really all that normal? ;-)

odeo_logo.gifWe get Greg Gershman on the horn to tell us about Odeo’s acquisition of Blogdigger. He then goes on to tell us about the new Odeo. I ask him to stop beating around the bush and tell us how the new Odeo will change our lives.

Is Odeo building out the DC digs and do they need staffing?

Chicks love blogs.

Then we get into Social Times and this post about Twitter being too full of junk. Debates the difference between Social Times in DC and other similar type blogs elsewhere.

Then Geoff calls in from his super secret mission to somewhere. Busts our balls.

We’re so fragmented. Politics, small business, our own community. How can we be better stewards of what we have.

Episodes 9a and 9b: DC Psychological Complex

March 4, 2008

Due to a glitch we had a two-parter.  We talked extensively in part one about this particular issue: Are DC Start-Ups Developing a Complex. The hub bub surrounded a Washington Post article featuring LaunchBox Digital. LaunchBox Digital was supposed to support DC firms, but funded a Silicon Valley firm first.  We chalked it up to a PR gaffe after much debate and talking with East Coast Blogging’s Jimmy Gardner.

Part II (Episode 9b): More of the above.  How Bobbie Kilberg and the Northern Virginia Technology Council misrepresents the tech community to the larger nation. Also we talked about how DC has a big tech community but its unsexy government stuff.

Also mentioned - Rick Segal’s Just Say No (Nicely). (Full Disclosure: JLA is an investor in Aaron’s employer b5media)

We discussed what East Coast Blogging is up to. We’ll be doing a live show from SXSW next week.

District of Corruption #8: Twitter, Scoble and Coworking

February 26, 2008

Great show today. Let’s get into it.

We kicked off the show discussing Twitter. Is it really a legitimate network with less than 1% of the U.S. population? Can it really scare? Why shouldn’t Twitter be more along the lines of a protocol that other companies and innovators can build on? Geoff had a post that stirred up some controversy along these lines today.

Scoble is complaining that tech bloggers aren’t talking about politics. Has he seen the DC community? Only in DC will social media people get together to watch political results come in on Super Tuesday.

Alex Hillman who was the founder of Independent’s Hall joined us to talk about coworking. He discusses how the Philly community transitioned from huddling at cafés to a full fledge community, how they are able to cover their expenses at minimal impact to the community.

District of Corruption: Live from Austin

February 24, 2008

We mentioned this on our last show, but I wanted to follow up with a bit more of our intent. I’m going to be at SXSW this year. Geoff won’t be able to make it unfortunately. But thanks to the power of the toobz, we’ll be doing our show live during the festival.

The plan is, without confirming anything with anyone involved, is that I’ll be setting up in the Bloggers Lounge (full disclosure: The BL is sponsored by my employer, b5media) at 2:30 PM CST. For those doing the math at home, that’s 3:30 EST - a half hour before our typical show time. We will, of course, go live with the show at 3pm CST as usual and I’m thinking we make it a special 1 hour show.

The reason why we want to do a 1 hour show is because we want to talk to DC folks who are at the event. We’ll have an open mic and are asking DC folks to stop by and say hi, tell us about your experiences, your thoughts, your hangovers.

Of course, this has yet to be confirmed, but I wanted to float it to see what kind of interest there would be. Maybe I can even get Croncast to lend us his mobile studio for the day. Kris, can we? :)
